    LAWN AERATION

Lawn Aeration it’s important to you to maintain a beautiful lawn, you may have many questions about lawn aeration. You may even be wondering why you should hire a company to aerate your lawn, how often it should be done, etc.

The following will provide some useful information on the aeration of your lawn, and answer many questions you may have about aeration.

Having your lawn aerated is essential at least once a year (and ideally twice a year) in order to maintain the beauty of your grass. In order to yield a beautiful, healthy lawn, it is necessary for both water and air to reach the root system all times of the year.

Two things that often prevent the proper flow of air and water are:

    1. Excess Grass Thatch
    2. Compacted soil

Aeration aids in correcting the lack of water and air penetration in compacted soil by strategically placing holes in the soil with a special piece of machinery. Larger holes are put into areas of soil that are more compact. Some common reasons soil may become compact, and prevent the proper penetration of air and water to the root system of your grass, are:

    1. Prolonged weight on the area
    2. Vehicle traffic
    3. Heavy mowers (such as zero turn mowers)
    4. Excessive foot traffic

There are several types of aerators lawn service companies will use. The most common type of aerator is one where the lawn service professional will walk behind. The plugs, or holes , the machine makes in your yard will commonly be 2-3 inches apart, and 1-2 inches deep. In more compact areas, sometimes the depth will be up to 3 inches to help ensure better air and water absorption.

For best results, aeration should be done once in the spring, before fertilization, and once in the fall, after de-thatching. Since the aeration helps your lawn soil with the ability to absorb, it is best to have your fertilizers and pesticides applied directly after aerating. Even though it is recommended aeration be performed twice a year, some companies recommend it only being done once a year, right before the ground freezes, and directly after de-thatching.

In order to maintain a beautiful healthy yard, it is essential to have your yard aerated at least once, but ideally twice a year. When done once, the best time would be in the fall, right before the ground freezes. When done twice, it should be done once in the spring, before fertilization, and once in the fall, after de-thatching. In doing so, it will help to ensure that the root system of your lawn will get the necessary amounts of air and water.

Thatch buildup is a condition that can make your lawn not look heathly. If your lawn is is need of aerating don’t hesitate to call before it hurts you lawn.

    All About Phoenix Aerating

Aeration is best to do for lawn service in Phoenix during the lat summer. Most lawns do not need aerating unless more than every three years unless they get high usage. You can aerate your lawn with shoes with spies or with a machine. Machine aerating works far better but can be expensive. Most machine aerators pull up a little core of you lawn and leave it on the surface, that is the best way to do the maintenance.

A good aerating machine should pull out lawn plugs that are about the size of your little finger. When you get done there should be about 30 holes per square foot in your yardAeration allows air, rain and nutrients to get into your Phoenix lawn. These holes that are left also leave the lawn roots room to grow and get stronger.aeration lawn

The best thing about aerating your lawn every three years is that it help roots grow deep, lets the air flow into the lawn, improves water soaking, helps the nutrients grow and lets microorganism grow. Be aware though every time that you aerate you may get some weeds. This is not a major concern though as you will have a great looking lawn.

Aerating a lawn is often overlooked even though it is very important. Getting good airflow to the roots is very important. The more people mow, walk and recreate on their lawn the more compact the soil becomes. When the dirt becomes very compact the soil is very hard and roots do not grow well. Water also does not soak in very well to help the lawn roots grow.

Lawn Aeration perforates the ground soil with very small holes that will allow water, air, and any fertilizer that your spread through to soil and get closer to the roots. This will help the roots to grow deep as well as produce a stronger Phoenix lawn.

You will know when your lawn needs aeration if it does not turn green after you give it fertilizer or if there is many worn areas in your lawn.
Remember though that if your lawn has a problem with certain spots that it may need to be aerated more often such as a couple times a year instead of once every two or three years.

A good lawn aeration service will break through the thatch that has built up and dethatching your entire lawn. Most aeration devices have a prong that removes plugs from the soil. Lawn aeration devices are available in motorized or manual models. If you have a large lawn to aerate you may want to us the motorized.

Don’t forget that there are two kind of aerating machines. One just punches holes in the soil and the other removes the plugs from the holes after it punches it. The best one is the one that removes the plugs. If you just punch holes then they will likely just fill back in again very shortly.

A good aerating service in Phoenix should make holes that are at least .25 inches in diameter and 2.5 inches deep minimum. You also want about 30 to 20 holes per square foot of your Phoenix lawn. When the plugs are pulled out by the aerating service you can just leave them there and mow them up the next day. Remember though that you can just leave them there while they blend back into your yard but that can take a while and be somewhat unsightly.

    Tips

    • Aerate your grass right now this is very environmental.
    • The soil should be moist, but not wet. Wet soil catches in the hollow tines of the aerator and makes the process difficult.
    • If you have cool-season grasses, aerate in the fall. Lawn aeration for warm-season grasses is usually best done in the springtime.
    • When you aerate in the summer, don’t wait until too late in the season! Make sure there are four weeks of good growing time left for your lawn to fill in the holes and make the most of your aeration efforts.
    • After aerating your lawn, leave the soil plugs alone for a few days to break up. You can crumble the plugs with a rake, lawn mower, or old piece of carpet dragged lightly across your lawn.
    • Before your first aeration, talk to a landscape specialist about your soil type, the grass you have, and how deeply you should aerate your lawn to get the best results.

Lawn aeration is the secret weapon in making your lawn healthy. Aeration involves making holes in the lawn either by pushing a rod into it or by “coring”, extracting a plug of soil. By aerating your lawn you provide the following benefits to your lawn and its root system:

    • Oxygen gets to the roots and the soil allowing it to “breathe”
    • Organic fertilizers and nutrients get access to the root system
    • Water is able to better soak the soil and reach the root system
    • Helps to break up thatch
    • Tight, compacted soil is loosened up allowing the root system to grow

    Pick Your Tool!

The Power Aerator is usually a commercial tool that can be rented at many tool rental stores and are very useful for large lawns. This tool also comes in spike and coring versions. Use the coring version if at all possible. If you don’t, you’re not removing soil to allow the roots to expand. Power aerators can be a bit large and take some muscle to control so be careful when using this tool.
